Preoperative Evaluation, Preparing for Anesthesia and Surgery!
The pre-surgery or perioperative medical evaluation you have with your surgeon or Anesthesia provider is one of the most important consultation you will have before your surgery. The main reason for perioperative medical evaluation is to prevent the patient from suffering any intraoperative or postoperative, unintentional, unhealthy outcome or fatality, and to return the patient to his or her normal way of life as quickly as possible.
It is important that you as a patient know that there are many RISKS involved with any type of surgical procedure, regardless of how simple or difficult it may sound. For this reason, a serious discussion and meeting of the minds must take place preoperatively, to determine the condition or readiness you the patient are in before moving forward with the surgery. This information will help your surgical team determine the degree of invasiveness of the surgical procedure as well as the type of anesthetics to be administered.
It’s also important to have a well-documented history as well as a recent physical examination that places emphasis on the risk involved with regards to the patient’s cardiac (heart) and pulmonary (breathing) conditions and the overall condition of the patient to function after surgery.
Before Surgery
Astonishingly, 99% of the population does not know the importance of the Perioperative Anesthesia Evaluation. This is a meeting between you the patient and the surgical team i.e. Nurse Anesthetist /Anesthesiologist and the surgeon himself. All the DOs and DON’TS, eight (8) hours or more before the administration of anesthetics and the surgical procedure will be discussed. Not adhering or understanding the reasons for the perioperative instructions can result in a negative impact on the surgical procedure moving forward or to be achieved promptly. In this website, we’ll address many of these concerns and try to explain them in a way that is meaningful and useful to those who don’t know what to do before surgery.
